Our annual open house for fall enrollment is tomorrow (Feb. 16) from 6-7:00 P.M.
We are looking forward to meeting you and excited to show you what Cherry Lane is all about.
As a cooperative preschool our current families have opportunity to sign their children up for the following year before it opens to the public.
Typically students in the 2 day a week class sign up for the 3 day a week for the following year. We have 40 openings for the MWF classes, and only 32 students in the T/Th classes. On occasion we have some from the P.M. class who will want A.M. next year. That is the case this year, and unfortunately this means that going into our open house we have NO MWF A.M. SPOTS OPEN. If you have your heart set on A.M. please put your name on the waiting list. Circumstances change and we almost always use our wait list. We apologize for any inconvenience to anyone this may cause.
Our MWF P.M. class has several openings and both of our T/Th classes have openings as well.

There is a 45.00 deposit required when you sign up.

We are so excited to greet all of our new students this week!
Cherry Lane has undergone some renovations over the summer. A lot of thought has gone into making our space a place that is conducive to sharing and learning.
We think all of you will enjoy the changes as much as we have creating them!

Tomorrow our T-Th classes will enjoy their first day, and Wednesday our MWF classes
will make their way to our little school on 19th street.
We can't wait to spend the school year with you!

Thursday, September 2 from 6:00 ~ 7:00 p.m. is a time for students to visit Cherry Lane!
Mrs. Brigham and Mrs. Reitzel will be eagerly waiting to meet your child, and it is a good time for students to meet a few friends they will see on the first day of school.

This is an open house format so stop in sometime during the hour. Although all four classes will be attending, by putting a name tag on your child identifying the class they are in, you will be able to spot some of the children your child will be in class with!

Visitors Welcome! Be sure to take an opportunity to visit Cherry Lane before school lets out for the summer. Although we would be happy to meet with you during the summer months, a visit during a class time gives you a chance to meet the teacher and see what takes place at our preschool.

Currently we have openings in our MWF afternoon class and our T/TH afternoon class. We have a waiting list for our morning classes.

Tulip Time

We had a great time riding on our float during the Volksparade Wednesday May 5.
The boys and girls waved all along the parade route to the sound of applauds and praise from the crowds.
It was great to see Cherry Lane alumni as we passed by. Since Cherry Lane has been a part of Holland since 1956, people of all ages were able to say "I rode on that float!"

Thanks go out to our volunteers who worked hard to make sure the classes of 2010 were able to be a part of the Volksparade.

We held our annual open house last Thursday evening, February 11.
This was the first opportunity for the public to enroll children for the fall 2010.
It was a great success! Both our MWF morning class and our T/TH morning class are full and waiting lists have begun.
Although we have half a school year to go, we look forward with anticipation to all the new students that will be joining us next fall.
We do have openings in our afternoon classes, but chances are they will be filled before long.

Open enrollments begins at this time.

Enrollment began for current families on January 27.
Our MWF class only has a few openings left and will fill quickly so come early if you are interested in a morning spot.
A 45.00 enrollment fee is required when you sign up.

In an effort to keep preschool affordable our school board voted NOT to raise tuition next year, so prices will remain the same.

What's going on at school?

To the casual observer it may just look like play...but don't be fooled, overwhelming research in the area of early childhood shows that preschool children learn through play. Cherry lane is a buzz with learning through exploration, problem solving, small and large group activities, reading, writing, art, and much more.

Children are socializing at the snack table. They are learning manners and sharing, as well as working on eye hand coordination, and learning to be responsible for taking care of their own needs and space.

Boys and girls are working on fine motor skills, as they learn to write their own names. Each child develops at his own pace and so opportunity is provided for all different levels of development.

Our Monday~Wednesday~Friday students have learned all the letter sounds this month through the awesome Zoo Phonics Program! Above Dominic is working on his letter of the week.
Not only has he learned about letter "a" but he is working on fine motor skills as he cuts out his letter for his Letter Book.

Every day the children enjoy building with the train set. Each day is a different track! Lots of planning and negotiating takes place when a group works together to figure out which way it should go!
DISCOVERY!!!! Look a spider in the doll house! It was interesting to watch as the children found a spider had invaded their space. Our normally shy quiet Alaina stepped up and shocked us all by grabbing a tissue and getting that spider out of the house!

Boys and girls learn a lot through the use of blocks, including, eye hand coordination, size and shape differentiation, balance, and gravity. As you can see from the two pictures....it's all about the process.

So...when you ask your child "what did you do in school today?"...they may not be able to verbalize all the learning that has taken place, but you can rest assured that they are developing strategies, and skills that will take them to the next level of learning.

Flu concerns

In light of area schools closing parents have been concerned about when and how we make a determination to close our school.
I wanted to assure you that we are closely monitoring the situation and have been in contact with the Ottawa County Health Department. They would determine if a closure is warranted.
At this point although we have had children out sick, there have not been any confirmed cases of the H1N1 flu virus.
Ottawa County has provided a helpful web page on this subject.

Trip to the Apple Orchard

September included a trip to Crane's Apple Orchard for Cherry Lane's MWF students.
Check out the pictures to see the children learning all about apples! The children picked apples, took a hay ride through the orchard, learned about making cider and even sampled a taste of the cider and cider donuts.
The Apple Orchard is a favorite field trip and I think this year was no exception!

On September 25 friends enjoyed a great time of getting to know each other at our annual potluck.
Thanks to everyone who came and brought fantastic food to share. I know the children had a wonderful time playing together, and the parents enjoyed a few hours of visiting with one another as well!

For the past 53 years this old building has beckoned little ones to come play and learn. This fall is no different; anticipation is in the air!
The yard and classrooms have been cleaned and readied, name tags and cubbies all set to go, lesson plans and calendars are in place.
Just one thing is needed........CHILDREN!
Mrs. Brigham and Mrs. Reitzel are eagerly waiting to kick off the fall of 2009.
Just a few more days and laughter will be heard once again at Cherry Lane.

Each year we kick off the school year with our Parent Orientation night to give our families important information regarding the coming preschool year.
Last night was our 2009-10 Orientation.
The staff and board were thrilled with the turn out and the enthusiasm of our parents. Everyone was so eager to help...many asking to serve on multiple committees.
We are excited for the upcoming year...we know it is going to be a successful year of learning and fun.
Did you miss our meeting? Don't worry there are still a few spots on our committee list. We will give you a call to set up your parent helper work day and committee position.

Don't forget our MEET THE TEACHER NIGHT on September 1. Come between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. to say hi to your child's teacher and meet some new friends.

Cherry Lane was a proud participant in the Wood TV 8 Park Party!
Our activities included stamping art and a bean bag toss.
Both activities were a big hit, and the children went away with a cherry sucker and a Cherry tree finger stamp picture.
A big thank you goes out to our Cherry Lane Board for making it happen, as well as to all the parents who chipped in and helped at the party.

May is a busy time at Cherry lane. We kick everything off in the first week with great fun on the Tulip Time float. Although the weather man had been predicting rain for our parade...the weather was fantastic! Everyone had a wonderful time as we rode down Eighth street waving at everyone along the way.
This past week also included a trip to the farm for our Tuesday~Thursday class and a Mother's Day program for our MWF class.
On May 18 our MWF classes will be hosting the annual Father's Night and on the last day of school we will enjoy our graduation ceremony followed by a celebration at Timber Town.
We have had so many fun filled days of learning at Cherry Lane and the last days will be no exception!

Thanks to everyone who sold pizzas, subs, and burritos for our spring fund raiser. We work hard to keep our tuition costs low and one of the ways that happens is through our fund raisers.
We decided to support a local business this year and a big thanks goes out to Big Cheez for awesome support and service. This business went the extra mile in helping us with our sale and even gave us 15 percent of all the restaurant sales the night of our product pick up!

Community helpers

Tuesday/Thursday students learned all about community helpers last week.
It takes a lot of people to keep us safe and healthy....doctors, nurses, fire fighters, teachers and more! Our threes had some special visitors at school to give them a close up look at what they do.
On Tuesday an ambulance made a visit and on Thursday a policeman came and spoke to the boys and girls.
The friends at Cherry Lane say thanks to our community helpers and all they do to make our lives better!

This week the boys and girls in the Tuesday/Thursday class learned about the creatures who live in the sea. All kinds of ocean life activities were enjoyed including an art project making beautiful jelly fish. Our classroom is brightened by these awesome creatures hanging on display. When you think of 19th street in Holland one would imagine that our school would be located in a busy residential area. That is not the case. We are fortunate to be in a quiet neighborhood, on a dead end street.

In the wooded area next to our building we are able to observe all kinds of wild life, including these turkeys who were having a leisurely walk today as I watched through the window at lunch time!
It's even more fun to see these gobblers when the students are at school! They get so excited when they come up the hill and around the corner only to find the turkeys in the road!
We all enjoy the sightings...and are happy to share our little neck of the woods with such fine feathered friends!

There is an old adage that says "It takes a village to raise a child". In years past extended families lived together, moms visited with each other over fences to share ideas, tips and inspiration.
In those days I think that was the picture of the village.
Our village of today looks very different. With hectic schedules, working moms and dads, life in the fast lane, many no longer have that "over the fence friend" or extended family close by to share ideas or glean inspiration from.
One of our moms at Cherry Lane has a heart for sharing ideas with others. Katie Meyering and a close friend of hers have endeavored to return to the way of old where parents shared ideas and teaching tips with each other. I like to think of them as "over the fence via the web friends"!
They are starting a blog called abc and 123 A learning Cooperative. They will be sharing ideas and teaching tips that will be great for your child. This blog will be a valuable resource for you as parents. They will be looking for ideas from you as well!

Pee Wee Penguin is our letter of the week...she has spurred us on to think of lots of words that start with P....like PAJAMAS!!!!!

A.M. Pajama Day

From princesses to super heroes, pajamas were the hit of the day at school today!
With the help of a few sheets, tents were erected for some make believe camping!

We enjoyed some sleepy time stories like "Good Night Moon and "The Bear Snores On" and also a game of "Ten in the Bed".
As you can see from the pictures the boys and girls had a great time during downstairs centers!

Dads lend a helping hand

One aspect that makes Cherry Lane unique is the fact that parents help out in the classroom. This has gone on since the origination of the school.
Over the years more and more Dads have been able to come in and assist and the children love having Dad as the helper of the day.
I couldn't resist grabbing my camera and photographing the two Dad helpers as they cleaned up after teddy bear picnic day.
Thank you Moms and Dads for making our school great, it just wouldn't be the same without you!

It's hard to believe that we are thinking about next fall when we are buried in snow!
But every year in February we do a fast forward in our minds and begin preparing for the following year.
If you have older children you know the process begins now, but if it's your first child it can take you by surprise! We advertise in the paper of course and try to get the word out...but again if you are a parent of a preschooler you are busy with life and might not even see it coming!
So...if you have older children, get the word out, let all those first time parents know it's early preschool enrollment time!
We have been getting lots of visitors at school and want to extend an invitation to anyone who wants to see our classroom in actions.
Enrollment has started for current students as Cherry Lane policy is to allow current students to enroll first. So...if you come in for a visit and see a sign up..don't worry you haven't missed out, there are lots of spaces available and we will have our public sign up on February 12 from 6-7 p.m.
We cannot wait to meet all of you and welcome you into our preschool program at Cherry Lane!

NO TUITION INCREASE FOR FALL 2009

Tonight we had our monthly board meeting.
Typically this January meeting can run a bit long as we make important financial decisions for the following year.
We are a small non profit school and try to budget wisely as tuition and a few fund raisers are our only means of revenue.
In light of the current economy the board made an important decision tonight not to increase tuition.
We may have to work a little harder next year on fund raisers to offset any unforeseen expenses, but we worked hard to have a budget that was realistic and that would keep us operating with in our means.
We at Cherry Lane feel preschool is an important part of the educational process and hope by keeping costs down many children will be able to join us this fall.
Put the word out about Cherry Lane, and if you haven't already scheduled a visit, call for an appointment! We would love to meet you.

Back to school!

It was great fun anticipating Christmas and all its celebrations! The Tuesday/Thursday class enjoyed a wonderful party on Thursday December 18, with craft, treats, singing and a book gift exchange.
The Monday~Wednesday~Friday class had their belated party on January 5 because of the snow day on December 19. Although it was a bit strange to be decorating ornaments after most students had already packed away their decorations at home, it didn't dampen the fun and the children opened gifts, decorated cookies, and sang Christmas songs with vigor.
With celebrations now behind us we move into January with the joy of being back together with friends. In all three classes we welcomed new students and were thrilled to have them join us at Cherry Lane.
The winter months can feel long as we deal with bitter temperatures and much snow, but that will not impede our goal of growing and learning together at our little school on 19th street! We take our mission of educating seriously and we will continue to prepare our students for the future. Thanks to all of the Cherry Lane families who walk beside us in that endeavor!

Mrs. Brigham and Mrs. Reitzel are looking forward to the upcoming semester with all of the friends at Cherry Lane.
We've had so much fun together since September, enjoying crafts, stories, songs, trips, and more.
We are looking forward to lots more fun to start up again in January!

SNOW DAY DECEMBER 19

No school today due to the snow storm taking place in West Michigan.
This is not a good day for a snow day as it is our party/program! We will have our Christmas party when we return to school on January 5. We will not reschedule our singing program. Please reassure your child that we will have our gift exchange and party when we return. Don't forget to bring a gift to exchange. If you signed up to bring cookies it is no longer necessary.
The news has been tracking this storm all week so I did have opportunity to talk with the children about the possibility of no school today. I know that doesn't make the disappointment any easier, but it helps if they can be prepared for what is upcoming.
Have a wonderful Christmas and blessed new year! Give your little ones a hug for me and tell them I will miss them over the holiday.

Over the past couple of weeks the children at Cherry Lane have learned all about the first Thanksgiving and the way the Native Americans taught the Pilgrims how to survive in a new land.
We also talked a lot about what we have to be thankful for in our lives.
On Monday November 24 we enjoyed a great feast together. We did some baking and some butter making. And as you can see in the above slideshow we had a lot of fun together. The food and fellowship was great!

WEATHER RELATED SCHOOL CLOSINGS

In the event Cherry Lane Preschool closes for weather related reasons we will post closings on television stations WZZM 13 and WOODTV 8. These stations also post closings on their web sites.
There have been times when school has been open for the morning session but road conditions worsen and the decision is made to close for the afternoon class. When this occurs a phone call will be made to the afternoon families.

School has been in session for two months and our students are learning, growing and progressing nicely. Tasks like walking in line are now just part of our everyday routine.
As you can see in the photo students in the MWF P.M. class are lined up, ready to go...this is an accomplishment! It took a while to get the idea that we had to go single file so as not to run over the other students!
Although many parents are in the classroom once a month to see the progress, we still offer conferences at this time of year to touch base with anyone who might have some concerns or questions. These conferences are optional and informal, teachers will not have formal assessments, but will offer them in the February conferences.
Conferences will be held Wednesday through Friday this week. You must sign up in the coatroom if you would like an appointment.

Playground changes

Our little school has been at its current location for over 50 years. Hundreds of children over the years have enjoyed Cherry Lane both inside and out.
In September our state licensing director came to us with some difficult news.....according to the state of Michigan our playground needs to have some major changes in order to meet current safety standards. Of course we want our play yard to be as safe as possible for our children....... but a few of the items we will be bidding farewell have been part of Cherry Lane landscape since 1958, (and actually are probably built better than equipment half the age!)
Our little horses will be leaving us as well as our arch climber. Modifications will be made to our wooden structure and our swings will have to be relocated.
All of these modifications are going to take a lot of volunteer hours. Whether you are a parent, grandparent, friend or alumni, if you are willing to chip in and help we would be so thankful.

zoo phonics

This month at Cherry Lane we in the M-W-F classes met some new friends,
The Zoo Phonics animals that is!
The children have enjoyed learning the Zoo Phonics song, the signals and have already mastered many of the letter sounds.
Each week we will focus on a different animal, letter, and sound. The children are having great fun finding items in the classroom that begin with the letter of the week.
Parents, look for items in your child's environment that begin with the letter of the week...you will be surprised to see how quickly they are learning letter sounds.
We are focusing on sound rather than letter name at this point as phonic is the first step in learning to read.

Mrs. Brigham and friends enjoyed themselves at the pumpkin patch last Tuesday in spite of some pretty threatening weather. Before heading out the skies had changed from sunny to rainy more than once. The T-Th class decided to take their chances since our sweet threes would have been mighty disappointed if the trip had to be postponed. They were glad they decided to go! The rains held off...pumpkins and gourds were picked, and a fun wagon ride through the fields was enjoyed by everyone.

Grandparents welcome

From time to time I've given thought to having a Grandparent's Day at Cherry Lane. This thought passes quickly however when I think of the size of our rooms, as it would be difficult to enjoy the company of our Grandparents with so many extra people in our classroom.
But...the cool thing about a co-op preschool is that our assistants in the classroom are our parents. Quite often Grandparents will take the spot of the parent helper and they get a first hand look at what goes on at Cherry Lane. This time is so special for the child as Grandma and Grandpa are there for the full class time. We had just such a time yesterday with Zoe's grandparents. As you can see from the pictures it wasn't just Zoe who enjoyed the visit, the other children reaped the benefit as well. I also might add that though it might be a bit tiring for an adult who's not use to being with 18 4-5 year olds, they are also blessed by the event.
So......if you have a Grandparent who might be interested in working your co-op day, just fill out the appropriate "FIA" form and have them come and join in the Cherry Lane fun!

Imagination at work

Imagination abounds all day long at Cherry lane.
Here we have our kings and queens adorned with crowns and scepters fashioned out of toobers and zots.
There is something about the wonder of a child that brings joy to life.
Today on the playground we had chairs lined up for the "movies". Students were taking turns being the actors and actresses. We had ballerinas, darth vador, basketball stars to name a few.
As I was sitting with some of the "audience" I was very vocal with my accolades for the players....to the dismay of one of my fellow movie goers. Carson, my little friend turned to me and very seriously said "STOP"! I was taken back a bit by his stern reprimand.....I asked him "Why, what is wrong?" He looked at me as if to explain what was wrong showed how very little I knew (I just wish I had my camera to have captured the look). YOU DO NOT TALK IN THE MOVIES!!!!!
Well....I took my reprimand to heart and sat quietly for the rest of the show, enjoying the players as well as the friends I was sitting with.
Seriously....does life get any better than this? I'm glad to be part of the imaginary world of four and five year olds!

Crane's Orchard

Boys and girls learned a lot about growing apples today as we visited the apple orchard.
We learned all about how the farmer takes care of his trees, how to pick apples, make cider and shuck corn.
We enjoyed a cup of cider, and donuts and then finished off the day with a hay ride.

School Picnic

Friday night was the reschedule date for our annual school picnic.
The weather cooperated this week and we had a beautiful night!
Originally our location was Smallenburg park, but the park is adjacent to the municipal stadium which holds the Holland High football games. We schedule our annual picnic on a night when Holland is playing an away game. It just so happens that the next away game wasn't taking place until mid October. Since west Michigan weather is not too predictable at that time we decided to try another location.
We gave Moran Park a try and all agreed it was a good choice. We decided this just might be the new location for following years! The gazebo area was connected to the playground, there was a nice grassy area to spread out blankets and all who attended seemed to have a wonderful time.
Thanks to all of you who made it a success.
The food was great and a big thank you to our program coordinator, Gina Klavon who brought tables and set things up so we could have a great time.

Threes learn three!

"Three colored apples" was the subject at the art table today for Mrs. Brigham and her wonderful Three year olds.
They had fun counting the apples, and learning the colors as they made apple print pictures.
A lot of learning is going on in the T-Th class. The children are learning to line up...to share and to explore the world around them as you can see in the above photos.

Tears

Even though school is a blast and most kids love it..you have times when someone just doesn't want to stay. Sometimes it sets off a chain reaction especially at the beginning of the year!
One starts to cry and the next thing you know you have 4 or 5 criers you are trying to comfort at once.
Typically what happens is once the parent leaves the child gets involved in play and is just fine, often needing some coaxing to leave at the end of the day!
Today we had several criers, maybe it was the rainy weather, I'm not sure!
One little girl in particular was just beside herself. I felt bad for her mama because I could tell it was as hard on her as it was on the child.
Well...she is in the above photo having a wonderful time interacting with her friends.
I couldn't resist posting this photo....hopefully it will bring comfort to mom knowing her little one had a good time inspite of the rough start to the day.

This week at school we are learning what it means to be a good friend.
Today we learned about the golden rule and how important it is to treat others the way we want to be treated.
We made a magnet to remind us how valuable the golden rule is. We painted our projects with gold paint and even included a few golden nuggets!

A great start to the year

M-W-F classes started school Weds. Sept. 3.
Mrs. Reitzel was thrilled to welcome all of her students and the day went very well!
She and Amelia are shown here with Chocolate bear. Chocolate was hiding in Mrs. R's bag during circle time because he was so bashful. Everyone coaxed him to come on out and meet his friends and was he glad he did!
What a great group of buddies he will have this year at school.
In honor of Chocolate bear the children painted a little bear with chocolate pudding! YEP.....yummy pudding! Some friends even licked their fingers at the art table, (something they don't often get to do).
This is just the beginning......we are going to have so much fun at Cherry Lane, if you know of a friend who would like to join Mrs. Reitzel and her buddies be sure to tell them there is still time, we have a few more openings and would always welcome a few more friends!

We will be having our annual all school picnic at Smallenburg park on Fairbanks Rd. on Friday Sept. 12.
We have a great time every year getting to know each other over a meal and the kids have fun playing on the awesome playground.
This is a potluck so the first week of school a note will be in your child's cubby letting you know what type of dish to bring.
We provide table service so you will just bring your own beverage and ayour dish to pass.

summer adventure

Zoo phonics was our theme for the summer adventure class last week.
We took time to talk about all the animals from the zoo phonics program as well as a few others like the monkey and the whale.
We learned some sign language, made some great crafts and ended the week with a fun celebration with games, treats and even a pinata!
It was lots of fun, and reminded me that the fall is just around the corner.
I can't wait to see all the returning students as well as the new families at Cherry Lane.

Lonesome Cherry Lane

All school year long Cherry Lane is such a happy place. Laughter, singing, and playful voices fill the walls of the little brick building in Holland Michigan.
Yesterday I stopped in to get the mail and just to check on things and it just felt so lonely!
It sure isn't the same with the deafening silence.
It's an old building, been a school over 50 years and I don't notice all the little cracks and quirks of the place until I'm there without the children.
When I show the school to a perspective parent during the summer months I wish they could see it with all the children. It's the cutest little brick school you ever laid eyes on, but empty....it's just not the "real" Cherry Lane.
I can't wait for school to start so we can fill the place with laughter again.
I can't wait to see all you Cherry Laners again!

FATHER'S NIGHT!

Fun was had by all who attended Father's night at Cherry Lane Friday May16.
M~W~F classes combined to show their dads what a day at school is like!
Working with clay, singing, water table, along with refreshments and fun on the playground were just a few of the activities that took place with Dads and students.

TULIP TIME PARADE

Fun was had by all Wednesday, May 7 on our Cherry Lane Float in the Volksparade!
At 11:00 a.m. it was pouring rain and we had our doubts whether it was such a good idea to be on a float with 30 plus preschoolers. But.....the parade planners said it was a go...and go we went!
It rained right up to the time the children hopped on the float. Then.....like magic at 2:00 p.m. it stopped! I dare say it even became a little sunny.
The response from the spectators on the parade route along with the smiles on the student's faces made it all worth the effort! It was priceless.

A big thank you to everyone who helped put the float together and for all of the parents who braved the crowds to get their little ones to the parade!

SPRING BREAK

Today, Friday April 4 is the first day of spring break at Cherry Lane Preschool.
We hope you enjoy spending time with family whether you are just hanging around at home or are heading off for a vacation.
